Silver Dressings

Silver dressings are topical wound care products derived from ionic silver. These products release a constant amount of silver into the wound and provide an antimicrobial or antibacterial effect. The silver is activated by the dressing on the surface of the wound based on the amount of exudate and bacteria in the wound. Modern silver dressings are mainly used on infected chronic wounds, but can also be used on acute wounds. The rate of onset of antimicrobial efficacy of silver has been demonstrated within 30 minutes of contact with clinically relevant bacteria. Silver wound dressings come in a variety of forms. Choosing the right dressing depends on both the needs of the wound and the patient, e.g. exudate level, wound depth, need for adaptability, odor control, ease of removal and safety.
